‘It’s 10% what happened and 90% how you react to it.’
Every day, at every moment in our life, thing are happening, many of wish we have no control over.
All we can control is our own response to those events.
It’s clear that we don’t see the world as it is, but as we are, the world is only a reflection of our inner world.
Every time that sometimes happens in our life, we quickly- and unconsciously most of the time- give it a meaning. It’s what I like to call the story that we tell ourselves about what happened.
For example: ‘He told me that I could lose some weight.’ ( That’s what happened) VS ‘ I’m fat! Clearly, he thinks that I’m not attractive. He doesn’t love me, I feel so bad, I’m never good enough…’ ( The story)
Can you see the possible challenge with this made-up story?
The real challenge that comes from this story is that when we focus on it, we get more of it.
Our brain will start looking for confirmation of the story, which only reinforces the story about what happened.
Soon this becomes a belief that things are this way ( I'm not good enough, I’m not attractive…..) which in turn affect the way we act and therefore the story repeat’s itself over again like a self-fulfilling prophecy.
As long as we remain trapped in the story we will continue to project it into our future and remain affected by it.
Some of those stories have been with us for so long that it can be difficult to even consider it anything else than the ‘truth’. Because we don’t know any different.
It takes a great deal of courage to face our story fully, and ask ourselves, what if it’s not true? what else could it mean?
Our story about ‘what happened’ puts us in ‘Jail’, it makes us suffer and cause us to be unhappy. Our story drives us crazy.
We cannot change what happened. But we can change the story we told ourselves.
We can open our mind to a new truth and find the freedom to engage with the world and ourselves in a brand new way.
